For the best work on biomedical research on alcoholism by Latin-American studentsard

Professor Harold Kalant Ph.D. (November 15, 1923 – July 6, 2021) was a Canadian pharmacologist and physician specializing in research in alcoholism. Dr. Kalant was one of the founders of the Latin-American Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism (LASBRA) in 1993 and has always been an active supporter of our organization.

He was a professor emeritus of the University of Toronto, Director Emeritus of the Addiction Research Foundation of Ontario, and Former President of the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism (ISBRA). He served as senior editor for several journals and as an expert advisor in numerous committees, including those for the World Health Organization, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Dr. Kalant received numerous recognitions for their contributions to the field of alcoholism research including the Jellinek Award for Research on Alcoholism (1972), the Distinguished Researcher Award of the Research Society on Alcoholism (1983), and the Distinguished Scientist Award of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (1992), among others. He also fostered a highly productive scientific research community. He was supervisor and mentor to graduate students and trainees around the world. Many of Dr. Kalant's students became leading scientists in fields related to substance abuse. 

To enhance the legacy of Dr. Kalant in our society, promote the outreach of the research on alcoholism developed in Latin America, and stimulate the development of new researchers in this field, LASBRA has established the Harold Kalant Award to recognize the best research work on alcoholism and alcohol abuse developed by Latin-American students.
